Unmasking The Tobacco Industry

In January 2007, you may have been witness to a group of youth wearing masks and holding large, eye-catching signs in downtown Windsor. The signs outlined facts on the harmful effects of tobacco industry products. Our goal was to catch everyone’s attention, and to introduce ourselves to the community of Windsor-Essex County. This was our first event and we were very proud to receive media coverage from the A-Channel’s 6 o’clock evening news and a radio interview with CHYR. We received mixed reviews from the community, most of it being positive.

Valentine Event

Will You Be My Valentine? This event involved randomly putting valentine letters on students’ lockers throughout various high schools. The letters revealed how tobacco industry messages target youth. The high schools that participated included Assumption, Kennedy, Sandwich, Cardinal Carter, and Essex High.

Kick Butts Day

On March 28th, we went to Assumption, Kennedy, Sandwich, Cardinal Carter, and Essex High to ask students to share their thoughts and opinions on the tobacco industry and how smoking affects them. The event was also used as a way to promote Knot In My Life in the high schools.

Green Tree Campaign:

To honor Earth Day, we created and distributed approximately 1,000 miniature recyclable paper trees. Each tree had a message about the negative effects that tobacco industry products have on the environment. The trees were posted throughout Windsor-Essex County. On Earth Day, Sunday April 22nd, we had a display booth and helped plant trees at Malden Park. The display was well attended by the public and we had an amazing amount of positive feedback.

Upcoming Events

Drop Dead & Mall Display

This event will be held at the Devonshire Mall on May 26th. Our goal is to increase awareness regarding the number of lives lost each day due to tobacco related illnesses. About forty-four people in Ontario die every day due to these illnesses. We will have a booth set up, so come and visit us!

Graphic Design Poster Contest

We are hosting a graphic design poster contest for high school students. The purpose is to encourage youth to learn more about how the tobacco industry targets youth. The winning poster may be used in a local advertising campaign. Submitted posters must use graphic design elements to show the “after-effects” of tobacco product use. Letters have been sent to area high schools encouraging all students to enter the contest. All entries need to be in electronic format (i.e. CD) and are due June 8th. Entries are to be mailed or dropped off to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.
