Second-hand Smoke

Brief overview of the topic:

Second-hand smoke is extremely dangerous. It can cause cancer and other smoking related illnesses. During the last decade, the issue of second-hand smoke has increased in profile as communities across Canada restrict smoking though the passage of smoke-free bylaws.

You can do a school project on second-hand smoke as part of subjects such as: Science and Technology, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education.

Here are some ideas and questions to investigate for a school project:

  • What is second-hand smoke is made up of? How does it travel around rooms and buildings? Conduct an experiment on how smoke can travel in buildings by using incense instead of cigarette smoke.
  • Interview some of your friends who live in a home with second-hand smoke. Are they affected? If so, how?
  • Develop an action plan for a family to go smoke-free.
  • Conduct an opinion survey about banning smoking in outdoor spaces such as parks, playgrounds and beaches. Who supports it? Who doesn’t? Where else should smoking be banned? Should smoking also be banned in homes where small children live?
  • Conduct an opinion survey about extending the ban on smoking in vehicles with kids to include a ban on smoking in vehicles with non smokers of any age.
  • Conduct a study among your friends and family to find out how many parents are complying with Ontario’s ban on smoking in vehicles with kids.
