Youth Smoking in Canada
Brief overview of the topic:
Most teens think that the number of their friends or people in their school who smoke is actually much higher than it is. The real truth is that the number of young people in Canada who smoke goes down every year.
You can do a school project on youth smoking as part of subjects such as: Math and Statistics, History, Geography, Social Studies, Psychology, Native Studies.
Here are some ideas and questions to investigate for a school project:
- Compare youth smoking rates in Canada since 1999. How as the number changed? Why do you think the number has changed?
- Conduct your own smoking survey in your school or among your friends. Compare your results with national and provincial figures.
- Examine trends in smoking at different times in history. What is different? Why do you think youth smoking behaviour has changed from when your parents were young?
- Compare trends in smoking initiation (starting smoking) with lung cancer rates 20 years later. Is there a connection?
- Compare the rates of smoking in different age groups. What age groups smoke more than others?
- Examine smoking patterns in First Nations or among youth of different cultures. Are there differences that you can see?
